Welcome to the wonderful world of orthodontics!
Our orthodontic patients can eat almost any foods without damaging their braces or appliances. However, there are types of foods that should be avoided since they may damage the braces or appliances. They are constructed of stainless steel and very durable, but abusive wear can damage and/or loosen the brackets.
Stay away from:1. |
Hard Foods they damage the appliances by loosening the cement which fastens the bands to the teeth, by bending wires or breaking the brackets and other attachments on the bands and teeth.
|
2. |
Sticky Foods they distort and deform wires and dislodge the cemented bands and brackets. Gum should not be chewed. It can damage the appliances and can precipitate temperomandibular joint problems.
|
3. |
Crunchy Food such as uncooked vegetables and raw fruits should be sliced into thin wedges or pieces which are less likely to do damage. If corn on the cob is eaten, it should be sliced from the cob and great care should be taken. |
Hygiene• |
As you know, many of the foods available have high sugar contents and it is important to brush your teeth after eating. This will help prevent the possibility of decay. Poor hygiene (not brushing and flossing enough) can increase the chance of permanent marks on the teeth or cavities after the braces are removed.
