What are Impacting Wisdom Teeth

Third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the last to come out. They usually emerge through the gums between the ages of 17 and 25. Sometimes, wisdom teeth can erupt in the same line as the rest of your teeth.

They can occasionally become stuck entirely or partially in the gums or jawbone. The scientific word for this phenomenon is ''impact. Wisdom teeth are linked to an increased risk of developing cavities, gum disease, and infections.

How to Tell Wisdom Teeth are Entirely, Moderately, or Unaffected?

When a wisdom tooth is entirely impacted, it cannot be seen by the naked eye. They are completely out of sight under your gums. Some of the partially impacted wisdom teeth will have emerged through the gums. If your wisdom teeth are not impacted, you should be able to see them poking through the gums. It is essential to keep in mind that even non-impacted wisdom teeth might cause problems.

Soft and Hard Tissue Impaction

Your dentist may use "soft tissue impaction" and "hard tissue impaction" when describing your condition. When a tooth erupts through the jawbone but stops short of the gums, this condition is known as soft tissue impaction. When your tooth is impacted by hard tissue, your gums and jawbone will still protect it.

When Should I Have my Wisdom Teeth Treated if they are Impacted?

Pain or other symptoms behind the third to last molar should prompt a trip to the dentist. Wisdom teeth impaction may be the root of your discomfort, which they may diagnose.

An impacted wisdom tooth can cause many symptoms, including swelling, bad breath, and facial pain. To alleviate pain and prevent future dental problems, many people opt to have their wisdom teeth extracted during a routine oral surgery treatment. Talk to our dentist to see if this procedure is proper for you.
